about

"Raptivism is a project that I embarked on while in my residency at Subsation Studio in 2014 and completed in Brooklyn, NY in 2015. This record is a sonic documentation of my development as an mc, producer, and engineer. I took the opportunity during this time to make these songs with people whose art I love and who I enjoy collaborating with. Not one person on this album isn't someone who I consider a dear friend, and my appreciation goes out to my community of producers, vocalists, and musicians alike. My goal was to make great songs. From age 11, when I started rapping, I have always had a deep care for changing the world and making sense of it with art, which I suppose you could call 'activism'. I use rap, under the umbrella of my commitment to hip-hop, as a tool to construct positivity for people and communities around the world. For me, hip-hop is a way of life, and I am an example. It gave me infinite fulfillment in times when I would otherwise have none; It gave me a skill that I am able to spend a lifetime developing. A good friend of mine told me that music is the last legal magic, so I use this magic to speak truth to power, to relate to humanity, and to bring about celebratory feelings, especially via live performance. For me, life is simply about creating extraordinary moments, and that's what this EP is for me- creating these kinds of moments through music that will perhaps last beyond my life time. The rest is up to you to make your own meaning of... and my hope is that I can at least change lives in the way that many artists have changed mine." - Jackson Whalan
